Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra

Support the Orchestra

For nearly nine decades, the Jerusalem Symphony has been one of Israel's defining cultural voices — bringing music, education, and artistic dialogue to generations. Today, it needs your support to survive.

The Situation

$2 million

urgently needed to ensure the orchestra's future

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1938, is one of the oldest and most storied symphony orchestras in the Middle East. It has performed through the most formative decades of Israeli history, serving as a living expression of Jerusalem's cultural identity to the world.

Today, the orchestra faces an unprecedented financial crisis. Without urgent help, this irreplaceable institution may not survive to reach its 90th anniversary.

Great cultural institutions cannot simply be rebuilt once they disappear. The musicians, the repertoire, the community it serves — these take generations to build and moments to lose.

Letters of Support

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, one of Israel's oldest cultural institutions, will mark its 90th anniversary next season.

Today, the orchestra is facing a real threat of severe downsizing due to the dramatic reduction of public and municipal funding in the current situation affecting Israel.

Over the past years, I have worked to restore the orchestra's international artistic standing, bring it back to the stages of leading European concert halls, and rebuild its artistic future.

At this very moment, there is a real danger of losing everything that has been rebuilt through enormous effort.

In order to preserve the orchestra, its musicians, and its full artistic activity, long-term support of USD 2 million annually over the next five years is urgently needed.

This is no longer only about music.

The loss of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in the year of its 90th anniversary would be an irreparable loss for the cultural life of Jerusalem and Israel.

Julian Rachlin Music Director, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

As Artistic Director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, I speak not only as a musician, but as someone who deeply believes that culture is one of the foundations of any civilized society.

In difficult times, people sometimes ask whether culture can wait. Perhaps the better question is this: if we stop supporting culture, what exactly are we trying to preserve?

For nearly 90 years, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra has been an important part of the cultural life of Jerusalem and Israel. It is not simply an orchestra. It represents history, tradition, education, inspiration, and a connection between generations.

Today, the orchestra is facing a critical moment. To secure its immediate future, we urgently need to raise 2 million dollars.

This is not simply about funding another institution. It is about preserving a major cultural institution that has served society for decades and deserves to continue doing so.

Michael Gurfinkel Artistic Director, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

I wish to express our deep concern regarding the severe financial crisis currently threatening the very existence of our orchestra.

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra is a remarkable and essential cultural institution — not only for Jerusalem, but for the State of Israel as a whole. Soon, our orchestra will celebrate its 90th anniversary, making it the oldest symphony orchestra in the Land of Israel.

For nearly nine decades, we have proudly represented Jerusalem and Israel through countless concerts of the highest artistic level, collaborating with outstanding conductors and soloists from Israel and around the world. Throughout the years, we have educated generations of listeners and participated in innumerable projects for children, adults, families, and lovers of classical music from every part of Israeli society.

Our orchestra has served as a bridge between cultures, uniting people from the rich and diverse spectrum of Israeli life through music. We have brought joy, comfort, inspiration, and hope to hundreds of thousands of listeners, especially during the most difficult periods in Israel's history. We have celebrated the independence of our country throughout its existence, accompanied state ceremonies for Israeli presidents and prime ministers, and for decades our performances were broadcast on national radio.

We have also welcomed and integrated hundreds of new immigrant musicians from all over the world, contributing not only to Israeli culture, but also to the social and human fabric of this country.

Over the years, like many orchestras in Israel and around the world, we have faced financial difficulties and managed to overcome them with determination and public support. However, the current crisis is deeper and more alarming than ever before. It poses a real and immediate threat to the orchestra's continued existence, to the livelihoods of its musicians, and to one of Israel's most important cultural treasures.

This situation is both painful and absurd. There is no reasonable justification for allowing such a historic and vital institution to live under the constant threat of budget cuts, layoffs, and possible closure.

For the sake of music, culture, education, spiritual and emotional well-being, and for the future of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, we appeal for support and assistance in raising the funds necessary to secure the orchestra's future.

We sincerely hope to find attentive ears, generous hearts, and partners who understand the immense cultural value and importance of preserving this orchestra for future generations.

With respect and gratitude,

Janna Gandelman Concertmaster, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

For many years, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra has been my musical home. As Concertmaster, I have witnessed the unique power of music to bring people together across generations, cultures, and backgrounds.

For nearly ninety years, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra has been one of Israel's leading cultural institutions, inspiring audiences through concerts, education, and community outreach. Today, however, it faces an unprecedented financial crisis that threatens its future.

The loss of this orchestra would be a profound cultural tragedy for Jerusalem, for Israel, and for the international musical community. Once an orchestra of this artistic caliber disappears, rebuilding it is extraordinarily difficult.

I am proud of my colleagues, whose dedication, professionalism, and artistic excellence remain unwavering despite these challenges. We continue to believe deeply in our mission and in the importance of bringing music to our society.

I urge everyone who values culture, education, and the future of music to support the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Your contribution is not simply a donation — it is an investment in a living cultural legacy for future generations.

Thank you for helping ensure that the music continues.

Jenny Hünigen Concertmaster, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

Voices of Support

"The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra has been an important part of Israel's musical and cultural life for nearly 90 years. Orchestras such as this are essential not only for artistic excellence, but also for preserving cultural tradition and human connection, especially in difficult times. I sincerely hope that the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will receive the support necessary to continue its important work in the years ahead."
Zubin Mehta - Conductor
"I was astonished and shocked to learn about the real danger of closing the 90–year old Jerusalem Symphony orchestra, which has played a very important role in the culture of the capital of Israel the country and the whole Jewish world. It is clear that high culture is as indispensable for the normal life of any country as education, defence and science. That is why every civilised country has in its capital a full symphony orchestra and sometimes more than one. I do not believe that a country like Israel which is so successful in economy, finance, science and the arts cannot find a relatively modest budget for such a good orchestra which for many decades has been an excellent ambassador of our country around the world. To shamefully close it means to give an awful blow not only to the cultural life of our capital, but to the prestige of Israel."
Evgeny Kissin - Pianist
"I have had a pleasure to perform with the wonderful Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra on many memorable occasions since well over half a century and I am very much looking forward to participating in their 90th Anniversary Season next year alongside their outstanding Music Director, my old dearest friend and colleague, Julian Rachlin!

I was obviously completely and utterly shocked to hear about the current crisis and find it absolutely unthinkable and unimaginable that such an important cultural institution might no longer exist!

They deserve unreserved support from all possible sides and directions and I can only sincerely hope for another miracle in Jerusalem!"
Mischa Maisky - Cellist
"What makes Israel special is its amazing range of what makes a country a great one, in spite of this country’s complicated story, it always strived to embrace the arts and music, for which there are always huge amount of great talent available. To lose the great Jerusalem Symphony for me is a simply unimaginable tragedy - a great orchestra with great musicians, who simply will lose their jobs, and will start looking for new jobs elsewhere in the world, or worse, be unemployed in Israel - it cannot be allowed!!!"
Yefim Bronfman - Pianist
"It was a great joy for me to make music with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra!

I fully experienced both the genuine orchestral culture and the highest level of musicianship of the orchestra, including in the chamber concert.

But above all, I was deeply touched by the musicians' love for art, their dedication, and the care and sensitivity with which they create music.

I wish all the very best to the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra!"
Nikolai Lugansky - Pianist
"The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra represents a remarkable artistic tradition that is deeply important to preserve for future generations. It is not only part of cultural history, but also a living source of inspiration, humanity, and connection."
Alexander Malofeev - Pianist
"I am deeply saddened to learn that the Jerusalem Symphony is at risk of disappearing.

It is inconceivable that a city of such historic, spiritual, and cultural significance could lose an institution that embodies the artistic soul of its society.

Every possible effort must be made to preserve this national heritage, so that music continues to inspire, unite, and serve as a source of pride for Jerusalem and for Israel as a whole."
Charles Dutoit - Conductor
"For the past 85 years, the Jerusalem Symphony has been at the heart and soul of music, not only for its home city but for thousands of listeners in the country. In today’s difficult times, support is needed more than ever. Keeping the music alive is a critical part of the orchestra's mission. I sincerely hope that you will help sustain this very important component of Israel’s culture."
Leonard Slatkin - Conductor
"We live in troubled times with various wars and conflicts happening in different places. In such times we all need something that helps us to survive, to remain human and to maintain empathy. Live classical music is one such forum where concerts - creating that special connection between musicians and their audience - allows the development of emotions, empathy and values.

Symphony orchestras have existed on our planet already for few hundreds of years and throughout the ages, concerts were not only about entertainment, but also a form of education for souls and hearts. I really hope that all governments understand the value of their symphony orchestras - as part of their history as well as part of their future. The Jerusalem Symphony is an orchestra that is preparing to celebrate their 90th anniversary next year. I hope this remarkable orchestra, with it’s great and long history, will be provided with the financial security needed to continue their wonderful activity, giving all of us a chance to enjoy their concerts for many more years. Sending my support for the musicians of the JSO and their wonderful Music Director, Julian Rachlin, to win this battle for existence with the help of their friends, their partners and supporters from all around the world."
Andrey Boreyko - Conductor
